Meet at The Market

It’s a Tuesday afternoon, the clock is ticking away. Tick, tick, tick, 3pm hits. It’s time for a walk. Step right outside Union Cowork’s doors in San Marcos, CA and you’ll discover a vibrant array of local vendor stands, live music, and tantalizing aromas. Hot food, fresh produce, butcher cut meats, artisan breads, lest we forget gourmet cheese right at your fingertips… This is the San Marcos Chamber of Commerce Farmer’s Market hosted in North City from 3-7pm every Tuesday.

The history of farmer’s markets go back thousands of years. The ancient Egyptians used to gather on the shore of the Nile River to meet and sell goods. Fast forward to today, we gather on urban gravel streets in the heart of our local cities. Wouldn’t you agree that one can feel and hear the heartbeat of a neighborhood at a farmer’s market? It’s a special thing to feel like you belong in a sea of people.

Farmer’s markets have always played an integral role in binding a community together and encouraging a healthier lifestyle. All items are farm fresh, hot off the grill, and made with love. Our neighborhood farmer’s market boasts the tastiest tamales in the county, the most exquisite bouquets for your special someone, and the sweetest treats. As a consumer, you are directly supporting a community’s ecosystem by cutting out the middleman. What better way to spend a summer afternoon than bolster small business and shop for groceries all at the same time!

Modern life is chaotic. We’re always on the go, looking to complete all of our tasks with ease and efficiency – Oftentimes, we forget about the little guy in the midst of our busy lives. As grocery stores started to develop, the popularity of farmer’s markets decreased. In the past couple decades, however, markets have been on the upswing as people become more health-conscious.

This is a reminder to slow down – It’s okay to take a breather. Try visiting your local farmer’s market.

At Union Cowork, we pride ourselves on being community-centric, meaning the human connection plays an integral role in who we are and everything we do. We’re proud of our distinct communities which exude an authenticity true to their surrounding neighborhoods.

The San Marcos Chamber of Commerce is a tenant and partner of ours. This nonprofit team consists of Rick, Melanie, Christina, and Barbara – We can thank these 4 for bringing such a wonderful farmer’s market to our neighborhood.

“The Chamber is a community of businesses that share a common vision of San Marcos’ economic future and a spirit of entrepreneurship. We connect our members, consisting of businesses large and small, to valuable resources such as economic development and research, business education, advocacy, inspiration and each other, bringing people together in a community we love! The Chamber is the catalyst for economic vitality in San Marcos, and we believe that together, we are more.”
As the vendors set up their stands, lugging crates and hanging up banners, it’s as if a symphony is being played out. Everyone works together with a common goal. A man hands off a crate of produce to his partner who begins arranging a colorful display of carrots, berries, and lettuce into their respective baskets. The woman selling loose-leaf teas ties up her hair into a ponytail, preparing for the flurry of action about to come her way. A sigh of relief is let out when 3 o’clock comes around, and all is in place. They’re ready to start selling.

Here’s what Melanie, the head honcho behind the market has to say about the value it brings to a community “Farmers Markets are a beautiful gathering space and the centerpiece to a community. They connect farmers to consumers, fresh and healthy food to our diets, and bring rural to urban (HELLO North City!) Often a Farmers Market is the first direct-to-consumer sales experience for farmers, small business and emerging artisan vendors. It’s a space where local/community shoppers are engaged, excited and the impromptu focus group for new products. It’s pure joy to experience the passion, love, creativity and innovation that our community vendors bring each week!

North City is the home of the San Marcos Chamber of Commerce as well as a dynamic, mixed-use urban development – a new hub for San Marcos and North County San Diego. Home to a mix of retail & office, restaurants and tap rooms, new modern apartments, public art and community events, North City is a cosmopolitan center that sparks a strong sense of place, price and community! I couldn’t think of a better place!”

North City is growing, and we are beyond excited to continue to grow with it. So what do you say? Will you meet us at the market?
